Cannabis plants contain raw forms of THC that are not heated. This is THCA. Because the molecule hasn’t changed shape yet into what makes THC active, if left alone, it doesn’t do much to the body.

Many people keep asking is THCA legal because the answer depends so much on this one chemical distinction rather than the plant itself. A good chunk of hemp regulation has been shaped over the past few years by the detail that raw, unheated cannabis actually contains THCA and not THC.

Nothing happens when you eat raw cannabis leaves or chew on unheated flowers. No high, nothing. The compound just hasn’t converted. Getting there takes a specific reaction, and that reaction has a name people throw around a lot without really knowing what it means.

What is decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation is heat-knockout, a process that knocks a small carboxyl group off the THCA molecule, and what’s left over is regular THC. Combustion does it, vaporising does it, baking does it too, and it’s all the same underlying reaction turning inactive plant material into something that actually does something.

Skip that step, and THCA sits there, inactive, no matter how much of it is packed into a product. Smoking or vaping converts it almost instantly since the heat hits hard and fast. Baking is slower and more gradual, which is exactly why recipes usually tell you to bake flour in the oven first before mixing it into butter or oil.

How does the conversion actually happen?

The chemistry follows a pattern that’s fairly predictable once temperature and time are dialled in.

  1. THCA starts losing its carboxyl group once the temperature crosses a certain point, roughly where cannabis begins to smoke or change colour in the oven.
  2. Carbon dioxide gets released as a gas during this, which is a physical part of the reaction and not just a chemical footnote.
  3. What’s left afterwards is THC, now able to bind to receptors the way people expect it to.
  4. Crank the heat up, and conversion happens faster. Keep it low and slow, and it happens more evenly, just over a longer stretch.
  5. Push past a certain temperature, and THC itself starts breaking down into other cannabinoids, so timing and heat both matter more than people think during baking.

Half heat something, or skip the process altogether, and you end up with a mix, some converted, some not. That’s part of why two batches of the same edible can hit completely differently depending on how they were made.

Reading product labels correctly

Labels on THCA flower or concentrate usually list two separate numbers. One for THCA, one for whatever THC has already converted. Add them together using a standard conversion formula, and you get a rough idea of potential strength once heat gets applied. This is where people trip up most. A high THCA number paired with a low THC number doesn’t mean the product is weak. It just hasn’t gone through conversion yet, and the real strength only shows up once heat is added. Skip that detail, and it’s easy to misjudge a product based on the wrong number entirely.

Raw flower will almost always test higher for THCA than THC, simply because nothing has converted at the point of testing. Smoke it, vape it, bake it, and those numbers flip hard toward the THC side almost immediately.
