How Can You Control Your ‘Too Much Overthinking’.

As humans, we tend to think a lot. After all, our brain is created to think about different things. However, have you ever felt you just need to ask your brain to stop thinking so much -especially when it is constantly negative? Unsurprisingly, we all come across too negative thoughts when our brain is constantly feeding negativity. This situation can be challenging to deal with as one cannot control how to stop these negative thoughts from occurring constantly. 

Your brain has multiple waves that are directly related to your mental states or thinking. Usually, lower frequency waves help in relaxing and sleeping better. On the other hand, the higher brain frequency is better for focusing and solving problems. This is why maintaining a balance between the frequencies is crucial.

If you think you are the only one who thinks too much, you are wrong! Whether it is one of the richest people in the world or a teenager, everyone tends to overthink. The only difference is that the thoughts can vary from one person to another. 

How do you stop overthinking?

Overthinking does not work like a switch of a button where you decide to turn it on or off. Instead, you need to put in efforts to help your brain relax and give it room to not think about anything. Remember, your brain needs free space, too, and constantly occupied with one or the other thought is not healthy. 

Here are a few ways that can help you not think ‘too much.’

  • Practice meditation and mindfulness. Educate yourself about the benefits of meditation and mindfulness, and start slow. Give at least 10 minutes of your day to meditate. 
  • Try writing down your thoughts in your journal. Venting out can help release the thoughts you have been keeping in for too long. 
  • Distract yourself from the negative thoughts and start taking it in a positive direction. For example, if a negative thought is bothering you, try to take it in a positive direction. 
  • Focus on finding the solution instead of exaggerating the problem. 
  • Follow breathing exercises to calm your brain and release the build-up of muscle tension. 
  • Take one step at a time. 
  • Ask for support whenever you need it.
